Learn Japanese Culture through Shopping at a Shrine Sale

Shrine sales are antique markets or flea markets that take place at shrines all over Japan. These markets take place all over the Kanto plain and beyond most weekends.

I’d love how a shrine sale or antique sale or a flea market is a perfect way to learn about Japanese culture. It is interesting to see what is for sale, and trying to figure out what things are is half the fun.

While I’m not a Japanese art historian, I have learned a lot about the culture through its items on sale at shrine/antique sales.  Come add to your collection, or to start a new one.

There are so many objects from the past that are so beautifully made. They are a joy to collect: Kokeshi dolls, Scrolls of art, Pieces of old wooden machinery, Incredible pottery, both new and old, Fabrics of kimono, and yukata. Beautiful fabrics from obis and flags and indigo materials, Old coins, Old books made with washi paper, some printed, some hand draw, Old tools for making crafts of Japan, Old baskets, Old Sake bottles, Pottery for vases,Old calligraphy, and shodo supplies. The list goes on an on.

Make sure to remember to bring some eco-bags so that you can carry heavy things.

And make sure to bring lots of cash. Almost no one accepts anything but cash that includes bringing extra ¥100 coins
